While collecting the wreckage together I got on a big wooden crate, some sort of wooden crate, or wood of that sort. I saw an upturned boat, and I struck out for that boat, and there I saw what I supposed were members of the crew on this upset boat. I grabbed the arm of one of them and pulled myself up on this boat.
SENATOR SMITH: Did anybody resist you at all?
MR. GRACIE: What is that?
SENATOR SMITH: Was there any resistance offered?
MR. GRACIE: Oh, no; none whatever. I was among the first. I suppose the boat was then about half full.
SENATOR SMITH: How many were on it?
MR. GRACIE: I suppose there must have been between 15 and 20.
SENATOR SMITH: Was Officer Lightoller on it?
MR. GRACIE: Yes; Officer Lightoller was on that same boat.
SENATOR SMITH: At that time?
MR. GRACIE: At that same time. Then I came up to the surface and was told by Lightoller what had occurred. One of the funnels fell from the steamer, and was falling toward him, but when it was going to strike him, young Mr. Thayer, who was also on the same boat, said that it splashed near him, within 15 yards, he said, and it splashed him toward this raft. We climbed on this raft. There was one man who was in front, with an oar, and another man'in the stern with what I think was a piece of a board, propelling the boat along. Then we loaded the raft, as we now call it, with as many as it would contain, until she became under water, until we could take no more, because the water was up to our waists.
SENATOR SMITH: Just one moment. That was while you were on the bottom of the overturned boat?
MR. GRACIE: Of the overturned boat; yes, sir.
SENATOR SMITH: Was that a collapsible?
MR. GRACIE: That was a collapsible canvas boat.
SENATOR SMITH: What was the bottom, oval or flat?
MR. GRACIE: The top was irregular, and about 3 1/2 feet wide, I should say. It was like a canoe—distinct, therefore, from the lifeboats—and it was about, I should say, between 25 and 30 feet long.

Une des cheminées est tombée du navire et tombait vers lui, mais au moment où elle allait le frapper, le jeune M. Thayer, qui était aussi sur le même canot, a dit qu’elle était tombée près de lui, à moins de 15 mètres, dit-il, et qu’elle l’avait projeté vers ce radeau. On a grimpé sur ce radeau. Il y avait un homme devant, avec une rame, et un autre homme à la poupe avec ce que je pense était un morceau d’une planche, propulsant le bateau le long. Puis nous avons chargé le radeau, comme nous l’appelons maintenant, avec autant qu’il contiendrait, jusqu’à ce qu’il soit sous l’eau, jusqu’à ce que nous ne puissions plus en prendre, parce que l’eau était jusqu’à la taille.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Un instant. C’était pendant que vous étiez au fond du canot renversé?
M. GRACIE : Du canot renversé; oui, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Était-ce un canot repliable?
M. GRACIE : C’était un canot de toile pliable.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Quel était le fond, ovale ou plat?
MR. GRACIE : Le haut était irrégulier, et d’environ 3 1/2 pieds de large (1m), je dirais que c’était comme un canot — distinct, par conséquent, des embarcations de sauvetage — et qu’il mesurait, je dirais, entre 25 et 30 pieds de long (7,5m et 9m).
